Prince of Postcards 03

This is another of my postcard paintings.

The first part of this is the reference to Richard Prince's "Joke Paintings". These are huge, industrial looking transcriptions of very American humour. Mine are modest, reserved, hand-made, and very English. The text comes from saucy seaside postcards.

The second part of the work is to do with removing a part of an existing image to make that image something else. Here I have removed the postcard's picture so only the punchline is left. Out of context it makes no sense and is just words.

It doesn't quite work as a photo. There are dozens of layers of translucent colour, including metallic paint, and it's heavily varnished. It glistens and shimmers in a way the picture can't reproduce.
